Oregano Oil Soft gels

Function of Oregano

Oregano is native to Europe and naturalized in the Middle East. Traditional Chinese physicians have used oregano for centuries to treat fever, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice and itching skin conditions. Contemporary herbalists use oregano as an expectorant, digestive aid, mild tranquilizer and menstruation promoter.

The constituents of oregano include tymol and carvacrol which are antibacterial and antifungal. Thymol is a phenol compound that possesses antiseptic properties which can be helpful for loosening coughs and can be taken for respiratory conditions such as coughs, tonsillitis, bronchitis and asthma. Recently, thymol was tested on bacteria that is involved in upper respiratory infections. Results showed that thymol had a strong antibacterial effect both alone and in combination with carvacrol.

A recent Turkish study compared the antifungal action of both oregano oil and thymol on the growth of bacteria in foods. The study showed that oregano essential oil, thymol and carvacrol completely inhibited growth of the fungi. Studies also have shown that thymol possesses antioxidant effects in food. According to a recent study, it proved to be a good scavenger of the peroxyl free radical.

Other reports note oregano functions as an antispasmodic, helps smooth muscle lining of the digestive tract, settles flatulence, and stimulates the flow of bile.

The strong antibacterial and anti-fungal properties of oregano make it an excellent adjunct to a preventative nutritional plan.
