Stressed Out?
This could be a good thing. In general, stress is the sum total of psychological, physiological and behavioral reactions we have in response to the events in our environment that either threaten, stimulate or challenge us. Yes, this can be a good thing. Positive stress can give us endurance in a marathon or find answers to complicated questions. This is called Eustress, the good stress, and can be helpful by providing us with extra energy or alertness when we need it most. Unfortunately, stress can be harmful when not managed properly, and can not only effect our outward personality, but also increase the risk of developing health problems such as cardiovascular disease, anxiety, weaker immune system and recovery from disease. This type of stress is most commonly referred to as Distress. So what makes the effect of stress good or bad?
Stressors and Stress Responses.
The relationship between these two things will determine the outcome of how we will be effected by stress. Stressors are the collection of daily influences or events that tend to disturb our physiologic equilibrium (balance). They are the sources of stress to our bodies - demanding schedules at work and home, natural disasters, family trouble etc. Stress Responses are the mental, physical and behavioral reactions to these stressors.
Stress responses are potentially harmful, especially if they are severe or extend for a long period of time. If they are not managed properly, stress becomes a health hazard and can lead to a variety of physical illnesses and related health problems. In fact, stress has a negative impact on almost every organ system in the body, and appears to be a cause of immune system suppression, cardiovascular disease and an influence on the course of other degenerative conditions.
Progression
During the physiological response stage, sometimes referred to as "fight or flight," the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system (the part of the nervous system that induces the physiological changes that accompany arousal) is activated and prompts the release of two catecholamines (neurotransmitters) epinephrine and norepinephrine from the adrenal medulla. Additionally, glucocorticoids (stress hormones) like cortisol are released from the adrenal cortex. Some physical illnesses, such as peptic ulcers, are caused by physiological responses to stressors. Other physical illnesses, such as asthma and skin rashes, however, while not being caused by stress, are aggravated by it. Regarding the changes in body chemistry that accompany physiological responses to stressors, increased levels of glucocorticoids are usually more harmful to a person’s health than are increased levels epinephrine and norepinephrine. Prolonged exposure to high levels of glucocorticoids (Cortisol being the most potent), can lead to:
• Increased Blood pressure
• Damaged muscle tissue
• Infertility
• Inhibited growth
• Immune system suppression
• Brain damage
• Accelerated aging
